Expression of Interest 2026
Become an On‑Call Firefighter – Protect Your Community
On‑call firefighters are a vital part of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, providing an efficient and effective emergency response to communities across the county. We’re now inviting people to express their interest in this rewarding role.
We are currently recruiting for the following stations: Abbots Bromley, Barton under Needwood, Brewood, Burslem, Burton-upon-trent, Cannock, Cheadle, Bilbrook & Codsall, Eccleshall, Gnosall, Hanley, Ipstones, Kidsgrove, Kinver, Lichfield, Loggerheads, Longnor, Newcastle, Penkridge, Rugeley, Tutbury and Uttoxeter.
What does an on‑call firefighter do?
On‑call firefighters respond to emergencies from home or work when alerted, day or night. You’ll receive the same uniform, training and job satisfaction as full‑time firefighters, attending the same incidents and making a real difference when it matters most. You’ll also take part in weekly drill nights, ongoing training, and community fire safety work such as school and Safe & Well visits.
Is this role for you?
If you want to support your local community, enjoy teamwork, are physically fit, and live or work within around five minutes of an on‑call station, this could be the perfect role. Many on‑call firefighters balance the role alongside full‑time work, self‑employment or other commitments, with flexible availability agreed on a case‑by‑case basis.
Who can apply?
- Aged 18 or over
- Live or work close to an on‑call fire station
- Willing to work evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays
You don’t need previous experience, we welcome applicants from all backgrounds with strong communication skills, a team‑focused mindset and a genuine desire to help others.
Ready to make a difference?
Express your interest today to explore whether becoming an on‑call firefighter is the right step for you.
Once you’ve registered your interest, you’ll be invited to attend a drill night at your local station. This gives you the opportunity to meet the team, learn more about the role and the Service, and ask any questions you may have.
Station Managers will review the candidates based on the below short-listing criteria:
- distance to the station (how quickly can you respond from where you live or work)
- suitability for the role
- declaration of availability*
You’ll discuss your availability with the Station Management team to see whether your hours meet the needs of the Station. They will then complete an endorsement form, which you’ll upload if you choose to proceed with an online application.
Submit your expression of interest by clicking on the Register button below.
