Job Description & Person Specification

Role Purpose:                               

As a fire hydrant technician you will be tasked by the Water Manager with daily inspection programs of public hydrants. These will be as a result of local community, partner organisations and business concerns and queries.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Inspecting and testing hydrants on a routine or specified basis.          
  • Checking repairs completed by the Water Undertakers are of a necessary standard in line with BS750.
  • Reporting defects to the Water Manager in a required manner and in line with the water policy guidelines and procedures.
  • Fire hydrant functionality maintenance including the cleaning of hydrant chambers from silt, clearing of any overgrown shrubbery, freeing of spindles and replacement of spindles where necessary, fitting of outlet caps, replacing lids as requested, painting lids where necessary, erecting identification markers as required.
  • Locating hidden hydrants and update the X/Y coordinates to the Water Manager.
  • Completing fire hydrant pressure/ flow tests as directed.
  • Completion of the appropriate electronic forms, record’s and reports relating to the work undertaken reporting to the
    Water Manager where necessary via the work tough book and desktop PC.
  • Ensuring that the service vehicle is kept in a satisfactory condition and routine checks have been carried out.
  • Carry out work equipment inventory checks on the service vehicle on a monthly basis and request any replacements via the Water Manager.
  • To use service property, including computer equipment, for authorised purposes and in accordance with Service policies.
  • Attend training courses as required.
  • To familiarise yourself with relevant Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service policies guidelines and procedures.

 

Person Specification :   

The person specification provides a list of essential and desirable criteria (skills and competencies) that a candidate should have in order to perform the job.

  • Full Clean Driving Licence
  • Experience of using a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Good communication skills.
  • The ability to work on own initiative.
  • Team working skills.
  • Able to lift heavy objects in accordance with manual handling training.
  • Accurate record keeping.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • An appreciation of the rigours of working outside in all weathers for the majority of the working week.
  • To take responsibility for your own health, safety and wellbeing, and undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities for your role as specified within Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service Health and Safety Policy and all other relevant health and safety policies, arrangements, procedures, systems of work as specified for the post/role.

 

Desirable Criteria:     

  • Qualification under the New Road & Street Works Act 1991 section

              67 & 126 (units 1-6)

  • Experience of basic vehicle maintenance.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office to include Word and Excel
  • Ability to read a map.
  • Geographical knowledge of Staffordshire.
