Fire Resilience Crew

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has confirmed that it plans to ballot on whether Firefighters will take strike action in relation to the Fire Fighters national pay offer.

The Service fully respects the rights of trade union members to participate in industrial action, however it needs a contingency plan for any impact that it may have on our operational response and community safety. 

We would like to explore all avenues in order to maintain the statutory duties under the Fire Service Act 2004.

 We are therefore looking for applicants who would be interested in becoming part of a temporary Fire Resilience Crew to provide contingency support to the operational staff if needed.

The Role

In this role you will be supporting our competent Firefighters at incidents, keeping you and our communities safe is our number one priority therefore it is imperative that you are comfortable following orders.  Individuals will be required to staff fire appliances and attend emergency incidents, have the ability to problem solve, work in stressful environments, have good manual dexterity, while remaining focused. There will be no need to wear breathing apparatus and this role will involve helping members of the community at a variety of incidents.

Appropriate training will be given on the core skills needed to complete this role safely:

  • Dynamic Risk Assessments
  • Safe Person to Ride and Appliance Familiarisation
  • Equipment deployment
  • Scene Safety
  • Hose and Hose Reels
  • Providing water supplies
  • Road Traffic Collision procedure familiarisation
  • Fire Behaviour Recognition
  • Water safety awareness
  • Manual Handling

You will be paid for this initial training, which is likely to take 4 days, in January 2023. 

For each shift you support, payment will be made for a minimum of 5 hours and any additional hours at a rate of £11.51 per hour.  Subject to the Working Time Directive. 

In order to apply you will need to be aged 18 or above in January 2023.

The successful candidates will be required:

  • to complete a medical as this is a physically demanding role
  • to satisfy the DBS procedure.
  • to provide satisfactory references.

Please be aware, as stated initially, that the recruitment for these positions are not permanent, they are to enable the service to have a contingency plan should said strikes take place. Therefore, it may be that you are not actually required to perform the role.
