About The Role

On-Call Firefighters are a crucial part of the Fire Service - they provide an efficient and effective emergency service to the community of Staffordshire.

What is an On-Call Firefighter?

On-Call Firefighters provide emergency response cover from either their home or work base, To be eligible to apply you need to live or work close to a fire station, all applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

. After their initial training course, On-Call Firefighters attend weekly drill nights to ensure they maintain their skills, in addition to which there are many more opportunities for training throughout the year. As well as responding to emergencies, On-Call Firefighters can also get involved in community fire safety initiatives in their local area, including safe & well and school visits.

Self Assessment Test

· Would you like to be part of a profession where you can put your life skills into action every day?

· Would you like to work as part of a team?

· Would you like to work in the community meeting new people, being in new situations and meeting new challenges?

· Are you willing to work nights, evenings, weekends and public holidays including Christmas and New Year?

· Are you ready to work outdoors in cold, hazardous conditions for long periods through both the day and night?

· Are you mentally strong enough to deal with highly stressful situations in a positive and professional manner, helping people in distress and giving them first aid?

In order to become an On-Call Firefighter you must:

Live or work within five minutes of your local fire station so you can respond immediately. Your local fire station will have a map detailing the boundaries for the five minute callout time, please pay them a visit to see whether you fall into this category.

Many On-Call Firefighters are in full time employment and have an agreement with their employer to leave work should they be alerted to attend an incident. Others provide cover during nights or weekends. On-Call service also appeals to unemployed people.

As an On-Call Firefighter you will play a full and valuable role in Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and you can expect the same respect from the community and have the same job satisfaction as full time Firefighters.

Key Requirements

• Have a good level of physical fitness

You will also need to agree a declaration of availability with the local Station Manager? To obtain this you need to visit your nearest station, ideally on one of the drill nights.

About the National Firefighter Selection Process:

Anyone over 18 can apply to become a firefighter; however we are looking for people with very special skills and abilities.

A lot of the job is based around working within the community; therefore you need good communication skills. There are a range of duties within the Fire Service for all different types of people. Some roles will require a good degree of physical fitness, front line positions where you may need to use ladders, hoses and other equipment.

There are various stages of the application process and each must be completed before moving onto the next one. The different stages are :-

At the application stage under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 you are obliged to declare any unspent convictions or criminal proceedings pending as part of your application as these may bar you from working as a Firefighter.

In line with the Data Protection Act 1998, no personal details about you will be released from the organisation without your prior written consent. All information will be treated as confidential.

Medical:

You will be invited to attend a health assessment at our Occupational Health Unit where you will be assessed by an Occ Health Professional.

Training:

Your initial training (Core Skills) will be delivered on station over a 20 week period, where you will be expected to attend a 2 hour drill night every week. This is followed by further Core Skills training with our L&D team.

Your development phase of your employment will follow a 36 month programme. This is a continuous development programme and requires that within your first 12 months you must successfully complete the:

•             Core Skills Module

•             0-12 month Learn Pro programme

•             Breathing Apparatus Module

•             12 month assessment at Training and Development

Within the 36 month programme you must also successfully complete the:

•             Rescue Module

•             Hazardous Materials Module

•             13-36 Month Learn Pro programme

•             24 and 36 Month assessments at Training and Development

Upon successful completion of the whole programme you will be deemed competent in role and will be awarded competent pay. You will then be required to maintain your competence.

In order to maintain competence you will also be required to undertake and satisfactorily complete further training when required. This may include, if selected, driver training.

Training during your development phase and in your subsequent maintenance phase may be at venues which are within, or outside the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service area. In some cases these may be residential.

There are no pre-set qualifications, as they will need to pass the Firefighter Selection Tests.
